Questionable decision making? Since 2012 up to 5000 trees in Europes 'greenest city' have been felled to prevent damage to the surrounding city street hard-standings and building structures in order to provide savings for the council. Often the victims are the more mature and most culturally beneficial specimens due to their larger root spread and canopy size.

As Landscape Architects this is a bit of a wake up call in regard to promoting proper urban tree design and their installation. To avoid further such decisions being made our role must be to safeguard urban trees and their longevity via sensible design. This way urban dwellers can enjoy the socio-economic and environmental benefits associated via a greener landscape without the possibility of a tree been uprooted or dying a few decades down the line.
